What are the key differences between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16?
The standard iPhone 17 is where the biggest jump happened. Several features that used to be reserved for the Pro models are now on the regular iPhone:
- ProMotion display, finally on the base model: the 6.3-inch screen refreshes at up to 120Hz, so scrolling and games feel much smoother. It also gains an Always-On display that shows the time, widgets and Live Activities without waking the phone.
- Brighter and tougher screen: up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness, easier to read in direct sunlight, and Ceramic Shield 2 with three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
- A19 chip: built on third-generation 3-nanometre technology, with a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU.
- Better cameras: a 48MP Fusion main camera with an optical-quality 2x telephoto option, and the Ultra Wide camera is now 48MP too, with four times the resolution of the previous generation.
- A new selfie camera: the 18MP Center Stage front camera uses a square sensor, so it can take landscape selfies while you hold the phone upright and widens the frame automatically when more people join the shot.
- More battery and storage: up to 30 hours of video playback, eight hours more than the iPhone 16, and 256GB of storage as standard.

- A19 Pro chip with a vapor chamber: an aluminium unibody design and an Apple-designed vapor chamber keep the phone cooler, and Apple quotes up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation. That matters for long gaming sessions and 4K video.
- Three 48MP cameras: Main, Ultra Wide and a Telephoto with a 56 percent larger sensor, giving 4x optical zoom at 100mm and 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm.
